The Portuguese Course is divided into 3 levels which will be described individually as such:

Basic
Intermediate
Advanced (120 hours)
Course 1: Survival Portuguese Phonetics + Applied Grammar, Basic Conversation + Field Trips – (140 hours) Course 1: General Portuguese – Applied Grammar, Conversation + Brazilian Culture, Field Trips – (140 hours) Advanced Portuguese and Applied Grammar with focus on the Brazilian Culture and writing
Course 2: General Portuguese Phonetics + Applied Grammar, Conversation + Brazilian Culture, Field Trips (140 hours) Course 2: Focus on Listening and Speaking – Applied Grammar + Brazilian Culture, Field Trips – (140 hours)
Basic
Course 1 Contact Hours Minimum Attendance
Survival Portuguese 140 hours 80%

Specific Purpose

Provide the opportunity for the student to communicate about the day-by-day events and accomplish minimum surviving needs.

Contents

* Study Regular and Irregular verbs of the indicative tense in the present and future tenses plus introduction to the past tense.
* Hours / Numbers / Alphabet
* Study Adjectives / Comparatives
* Plural structure
* The day-by-day vocabulary
* Phonetics

Material

* Audio visual
* Samples of audio/video
* Brazilia songs
* Books and handouts prepared by instructor to be specifically used in class.

Strategies

* Situation dialogues
* Linguistic games
* Music
* Role play

Specific Purpose

Provides the student with the opportunity to sustain a chit-chat conversation and perform routine social needs with satisfactory pronunciation.

Contents

* Review of the regular and irregular verbs, indicative tense
* Study the imperative
* Study prepositions (uses and contrasts)
* Study direct and indirect speech
* Study subjunctive (present, imperfect and future)

Material

* Samples of stylistics books
* Grammar exercises for individual and pair work
* Printed exercises, charts, models
* Flash cards

Strategies

* Do the linguistic games and music to prepare the student to a hard grammatical point
* Read newspaper and magazine articles
* Organize students oral exhibitions
* Role play

Intermediate
Course 1

Specific Purpose

Provide the student with the ability to trustfully face several social demands and work situations as well as present the Brazilian Culture.

* Review of regular and irregular verbs
* Study subjunctive (present, past and future)
* Direct and indirect speech
* Review of prepositions
* Study active and passive voice
* Study relative pronouns

Material

* Samples of stylistic books
* Grammar exercises
* Printed exercises, charts, models
* Flash cards

Strategies

* Do the linguistic games and music to prepare the students to a hard grammatical point
* Read newspaper and magazine articles
* Organize students oral exhibitions
* Role play
* Production and understanding of texts (oral)
* Work on listening skills through movies, podcasts, Brazilian songs, TV ads, etc.., with focus on the Brazilian culture.

Advanced Portuguese and Applied Grammar with focus on the Brazilian Culture and writing 120 hours 80%

Specific Purpose

Provide the student with the ability to trustfully face several social demands and work situations as well as present the Brazilian Culture.

Contents

* Review of all verbal tenses of the subjunctive (simple and compound)
* Review of active and passive voice
* Study personal and impersonal infinitives
* Production and understanding of complex texts (oral and written)

Material

* Authentic texts from Brazilian newspapers and magazines
* Texts by Brazilian authors
* Samples of audio/video/ CDs

Strategies

* Watch Brazilian films and documentary and be able to argue
* Stimulate spontaneous conversations and debates
* Organize students’ oral exhibitions
* Expose students to complex texts and articles that give back an image of the
Brazilian culture
* Read newspaper and magazine articles in order to have students share their point of view and support their ideas
* Field trips to museums, art galleries, places with historical interests, farmer’s market, central market, landmarks, etc..

Our Teachers

Cristina
Português and English Teacher

Language and Tanslation (English – Portuguese / Portuguese – English) graduate since 2013 from Unilasalle (Canoas/RS). Has worked as an English teacher since 2008 and has been part ot It’s Cool team since 2017.

Roberto
French and Portuguese Teacher

French – Portuguese graduate from USP (University of Sao Paulo).
Part of his graduation was in Sorbonne, Paris.
Has had over 5 years of experience as a French and Portuguese for foreigners teacher. Has been part of It’s Cool Team since February, 2018.

Maria Inez
Portuguese and French Teacher

Language and French literature Graduate. Bachelor of Arts by Unesp. Bachelor´s degree in Languages by PÙC (Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo) São Paulo.
Has got specialization in Translation, French by USP (University of Sao Paulo) Master degree in French Philosophy by UFSCAR (Federal University of Sao Carlos), SP. Has worked at It´s Cool International since 2000.
